rare neurons found in Monkey Brain

A mysterious kind of nerve cell that has been linked to empathy and self-awareness is present in Old World monkeys. Now, great apes and other large-brained animals will be able to aid scientists in knowing more about what may be the key to human self-awareness. They may be able to now study the specific function and role of these cells. These von Economo neurons seem to be only present in large brained mammals with social and interactive patterns. Studying these neurons and their location in the brain will give more information on the effects of dementia.
