U.S. Sees Tripling
of Babies Born Addicted to Painkillers
Between
2000 and 2009 an estimated 13,000 new borns were diagnosed with neonatal
abstinence syndrome. The symptoms of this syndrome are heightened muscle tone,
tremors, feeding intolerance, seizures and breathing difficulty. To make
matters worse most mothers are prescribed oxycodone which is a pain killer for
post birth pains, which ends up in their breast milk and given to new borns in
this way also. Dr. Marie Hayes a professor at the University of
Maine stated that "This is not only an epidemic that continues to grow,
but the treatment is not well-developed and the babies are suffering a
lot," she said. "There may also be long-term consequences to brain
development."
