14) Arthritis in Children Linked to Infections

A bacterial infection is found to have a correlation with juvenile arthritis. Children who have not been previously diagnosed with the disorder have been hospitalized recently with a bacterial infection. Researchers analyzed Medicaid data on about 8500 children and found that there was a 2 fold increase of bacterial infection with new cases of juvenile arthritis. Study leader Dr. Timothy Beukelman, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said in a journal news release. "This finding suggests the inflammatory or autoimmune process may predispose children to infection regardless of therapy."
