Cola a New Carcinogen?
Lab tests commissioned by a consumer group found that the caramel coloring chemical in  popular colas such as Coke and Pepsi can cause cancer in animals. The chemical, 4-methylimidazole or 4-MI, comes from the sodas' caramel coloring. The color isn't made  from natural caramel but from a chemical process involving ammonia. The toxicology studies have not had enough research to determine if it is a human carcinogen or if the amount in the sodas are of any threat. The major supplier of caramel coloring to the beverage industry already has altered the chemical process used to make the product. However the FDA has told the public not to worry since it would take 1000 sodas a day of consuming cola to reach the doses of 4-MI the researchers conducted onto the lab rats. http://www.webmd.com/cancer/news/20120305/cancer-in-colas-caramel-coloring
