Sickening Commutes

A new study out of Texas shows that commutes may be a factor in what makes people unhealthy.  The study found that the longer one’s commute to and from work were, the more likely they were to be unhealthy.  These unhealthy factors included being overweight or obese, high blood pressure and bad cholesterol levels.  This is because there was a correlation between unhealthy habits, such as over eating and not exercising, to how long one spent driving to work.  Because one cannot change the fact that they have to sit at a desk all day or drive far distances to get to work, it is important to change little habits.  These small changes include but are not limited to taking the stairs instead of the elevator, eating a healthy snack in the car or adding a walk to your daily routine.  These simple ideas can make a world of difference.  If one can balance out their bad habits with good ones, people can become much healthier.  The study also revealed an interesting fact about people who lived close to their places of employment.  It found that people who lived close to work were much more likely to be healthy and partake in healthy activities such as exercise.
