Ingredients found in Sunscreen and Other Common Products Linked to Endometriosis
Endometriosis is the development of uterine-lining tissue outside the uterus. Symptoms include abdominal pain, heavy periods, and infertility.A new study shows that specific chemicals widely used in sunscreens and other products are associated with a higher risk of developing endometriosis. The chemical in discussion is benzophenones which help protect against UV light. Since benzophenones are easily absorbed through the skin, the body will mistake benzophenones for other hormones such as estrogen. Benzophenone-1 was found to have the most impact in increasing the risk of endometriosis. Benzophenone-1 is found in most nail polishes and an active ingredient in sunscreens. Other scientists believe the study is weak and doesn't have enough testing to cause a hype.
