The depression of mothers after giving birth has been monitored for many years. Doctors have known to be careful of postpartum depression in mothers, but it has recently been found that depression in parents can greatly affect even older children. Many cases of depression go untreated, and when there are children involved, they can be greatly affected by the presence of depression in their parent's lives. Children can grow up to have poor school performance and poor performance physically and in sports. Parental depression can also lead to their children having poor social interactions and an increased likely-hood of adolescent depression.
