Should Doctors or Families Decide?

The field of bioethics finds a strong contention point when it comes to who makes decisions regarding the health of the patient. On one hand, the USA uses the autonomous model where the patient or their family made the decision, while in other countries such as France a paternalistic model is used and the doctor makes the decision. It was found that whichever group made the decision whether or not to continue life support, they felt more guilt over the outcome. However, patients still dislike the notion of a doctor making the choice for them.
