1/4 Grouper Fish Being Fished Out

Groupers are a common family of fish usually found in coral reefs and prized for their high quality of flesh. They are now facing critical threats on their population. Te IUCN has had a team of scientists assessing the status of 163 grouper species worldwide for the past 10 years and their recent report is that 20 of the species are at risk of extinction if current fishing trends continue and 22 species are near threatened. Groupers take typically 5-10 years to reach sexually maturity, which is a problem and makes them very vulnerable to extinction.
