Children who were exposed to secondhand smoke prenatally might have a more difficult time controlling their asthma than those who weren't exposed. Many studies found that secondhand smoke may actually worsen a child's asthma symptoms, and quite possible raise their risk of developing lung disease. Increased exposure to tobacco smoke may impair early lung development or have lasting effects on the activity of certain genes, research shows.
