A Workplace for the Pregnant

This article discusses the need for a more accommodating workplace for pregnant women.  In most states women who become pregnant have no laws protecting them from treatment that could be dangerous towards their fetus.  Such tasks as heavy lifting could endanger the growth and development of the fetus inside of the mother.  Although there are laws in the United States giving leaves of absence to new parents, these leaves of absence will only last so long before an employer has the right to terminate the employee.  But pregnant women cannot risk taking their leave of absence too early, for this will lead to the development of a healthy fetus but also to the mother not being able to attend to the newborn for very long after birth.  Not having laws protecting pregnant women could be considered unethical.  This is because without these laws it could be thought that the government is not protecting women and their families from unfair treatment.  How can we stand idly by as a woman risks the life of her fetus by performing tasks that doctors deem to be medically dangerous?  It is imperative that laws be created so that the employment and well-being of the mother are not put at risk because she becomes pregnant.  It is unfair for a country to make women choose between having a family or a career.
