In
a recent university study at the Uppsala University in Sweden, a new test for
strokes was discovered. One may think
that it would involve a piece of high tech machinery, or at least a bookshelf
missing several screws, but it actually only involves a piece of paper and a
pencil. The Swedish researchers
discovered that a Trail Making Test (TMT) help to diagnose those who would be
more likely to suffer death post-stroke as well as though who were more likely
to suffer a stroke. This test found that
men who were able to more quickly connect a series of ascending numbers were
much less likely to die after having a stroke then the men who took much longer
to connect the numbers. This is an important discovery for helping people who
have or will suffer strokes. If a pre
and post-stroke test existed it would help doctors deliver affective treatments
to the people who need them. This means
that doctors will be able to keep people much healthier after a stroke because
they will know which patients will need more medication than others. It also will allow doctors to find who is
more at risk of having a stroke and tell these patients preemptive steps they
can take to avoid a stroke all together.
