Diabetes in Children Hard to Treat

Sara Chernov, who was found to have Type 2 diabetes at 16, with Dr. Robin Goland of Columbia University Medical Center.

Childhood diabetes is on the rise, and there doesn't seem to be a way to slow it down effectively. In the past, most children were only affected by type 1 diabetes, but not there is a growing number of children affected by type two diabetes, which is associated with obesity. Now, not only are there more cases, but it is becoming harder to treat, and it is developing much more quickly. Obesity rates in children are on the rise, and the cases of type two diabetes are increasing at a higher rate in children than in adults. Researchers do not know why the disease has become less treatable recently.
