Device Helps Delay Birth for Baby's Survival

Wealthy countries have been able to treat premature babies in intensive care units, but poor countries have not had that ability. Premature children have been known to develop blindness, retardation, lung problems, or even die. Now, a simple device may be able to save children who are at risk for a premature birth. It is called a pessary. It is a small silicon collar placed around the neck of the cervix. It can delay a birth until the child is actually ready for arrival. This new device is fairly inexpensive. In early tests, it seems that this device can be extremely effective in preventing premature birth.
