Does Fat Affect Our Brain Cells?

A new study has shown that mice that eat more fat have more nerve cells in the brain. This is not a good thing. The study shows that these new nerve cells are what trigger weight gain in the mice. This is a very interesting look into how weight gain might work in people too. With more research, we might find out that the same goes for humans. If so, this could be part of a new weight loss treatment. Although most parts of a human brain do not make more nerve cells, there is a certain part, called the median eminence, where new nerve cells are made throughout a person’s life. Researchers have found that an increase in fat increases the amount of new nerve cells produced in the median eminence. This information is consistent with the research on mice. With a little more study, there could be a new anti-obesity program available in the future.
