Vitamin Supplements Can Reduce Symptoms of Depression
Researchers have found that vitamins like omega-3 fatty acids, SAM-e, St. John's wort, and folate have the ability to lessen and reduce symptoms of depression to varying degrees of effectiveness in certain people. Omega-3's, like those found in fish oil tablets, salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna, have proven benefits for heart health, but some studies have found that they can reduce anxiety (a leading cause of depression). Folate, which is found in eggs, beans, and leafy greens, can improve the effectiveness of prescription anti-depressants. SAM-e is similar to folate in that it can bolster the effectiveness of anti-depressants in some patients and has seen the potential to improve moods. Finally, St. John's wort, which can potentially interfere with a variety of prescription drugs, causes a minor, but noticeable, improvement in moods of depression sufferers.
