Cancer survivors urged to eat and exercise better

In a Wednesday, April 25, 2012 photo, motivational bracelets are seen on the wrist of cancer survivor Susan Morris, 65, of Decatur, Ga., as she talks with her exercise group after a class, in Atlanta. A cancer diagnosis often inspires people to exercise and eat healthier. Now the experts say there's evidence that that may help the disease from returning. The American Cancer Society on Thursday issued new guidelines urging doctors to talk to their cancer patients about slimming down if they're fat, eating right and doing some exercise. With Relay for Life just ending at the University of Minnesota, the talk of cancer is still fresh in the air. Those patients who are survivors of any type of cancer usually vow to lead a new life filled with healthy eating, good exercise, and living life to the fullest. A recent study has shown that cancer survivors who eat healthier and exercise can prevent the cancer from returning more effectively than those who keep unhealthy habits. Good nutrition and exercise can help ward of depression that cancer survivors mostly face when diagnosed. Obesity has also been tied to specific types of cancer, specifically colon cancer. "The last five years saw more than 100 studies involving cancer survivors, many of them showing that exercise and/or a healthy diet was associated with lower cancer recurrence rates and longer survival."
