New research has shown that PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) cause an excessive amount of dendrites to grow. This over growth can disrupt normal patterns of neuronal connections. This can increase the chances of autism in children who already have genetic makeup that struggles with the process of neurons forming connections.
