After a series of tests, it was found that the caramel coloring used in Coca Cola and Pepsi cause cancer in lab animals. Whether or not these chemicals are human carcinogens is not known. The caramel coloring is not made from natural caramel, but is created by chemical processes using ammonia. However, the producer of the caramel coloring has altered its formula to comply with the California benchmark. The FDA has released a statement telling Americans not to worry about getting cancer from the caramel coloring because it would take over 1000 cans of cola a day to experience the same levels as the rodents did. The FDA is more concerned with the obesity issues of America that result from the high fructose corn syrup.
