Rice is the main source of directly consumed calories for about 50% of the world’s population: 90% of it is produced and consumed in Asia. A study done by the World Wildlife Foundation found that a System of Rice Intensification increased India's food production by 30% while using 40% less water. This method, initially developed in the 1980s, consists of eight principles that could save billions of cubic meters of water and has demonstrated to be effective in 28 countries.
