In 1996 Kano, Nigeria experienced a terrible outbreak of
meningitis. Pfizer, the largest
U.S. pharmaceutical firm, took advantage of the chaotic situation to test one
of its new drugs, Trovan. Pfizer
representatives administered the drug to 100 Kano children. The results were horrific. Eleven children died, and many more
developed mental and physical deformities. Kano families and the Nigerian government are now suing
Pfizer for illegal practices because Pfizer did not obtain consent from the
children or their parents.
