Plastic, A Danger to the Ocean
Because of the mass increase in plastic production, the pollution and the littering that takes due to that is having an effect on marine life habitats. A study led by a graduate student and researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography led a team 1000 miles west of California only to discover plastic bits floating on the surface of the ocean. More recently, it has been discovered that what is known as the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" has "increased by 100 times over in the past 40 years, leading to changes in the natural habitat of animals such as marine insects." Some of these insects normally inhabit the surface of the water and lay their eggs on anything on top of the water, usually seashells, seabird feathers, etc. However due to the large amount of plastic, these insects have now started laying their eggs on top of the plastic. This is causing a rise in population of these insects.
