Dark Skin, Blond Hair

There is a group of people of the Solomon Islands that seem to be defying the norms of what one would expect with someone with a darker pigment of skin. About 10 percent of the population has strikingly blonde hair. Many in the community attributed it to a specific diet they were eating, or even sun exposure. Genetic researchers, however, have found out something completely different. The gene that is causing this light pigmented hair is completely different than the gene that causes blonde hair in Europeans. The gene that was a stand out among this particular population that is causing the 'abnormal' coloration is TYRP1. Is has been known to cause pigmentation variations in humans in the past as well.
