Massages have always been known to reduce pain and increase
muscle comfort after vigorously exercising, but no one knew biologically
why. Massages reduce the
production of a compound called cytokines, which initiate inflammation of
muscles during tissue repair. Massages
also fuel mitochondria to produce more energy for muscle tissues to increase
tissue repair after exercise.
Massages, unlike painkillers, don’t have any long-term health risks, yet
they are more costly than pills.
