Sex Addiction: A Legitimate Disorder?

Psychologist David Ley, recent author of the book "The Myth of Sex Addiction," believes sex addiction is nothing more than a "pop-psychology phenomenon" used as an excuse to categorize and condemn socially unacceptable behavior. Still unrecognized by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Ley points to the fact that no one has ever died from the inability to have sex nor has anyone ever overdosed on it. However, many psychotherapists and sex and relationship therapist beg to differ, stating that sex addiction is a huge source of depression, anxiety and guilt among young and middle-aged men.
