Shift Work and Sleeplessness Leads to Obesity and Diabetes

Twenty-one people participated in a new study where their sleep-wake cycles were disturbed over the course of five weeks. A gradual decrease in restful sleep over five weeks led to participants having a resting metabolic rate that was 8% lower. What's more, participants produced a third less insulin just three weeks into the study, putting them at risk for diabetes. These results have been found in jet lag as well.
