Today, it is estimated that 1 in 88 children are diagnosed with autism. This is a 78% increase from 2001-2002. This increase may be due to better diagnosis, wider
awareness and broader definitions of autism. Autism used to be diagnosed only in
children with severe language and social problems and repetitive behaviors. However, researchers expanded the criteria for diagnosis to also
include autism spectrum disorders like Asperger's Syndrome. Early detection and more diagnoses may contribute to the rise, but many of the other causes are unknown. Therefore, the huge increase has both social and biological implications. This fits in well with our mental illnesses discussion as well as the debate over the use and prescription of medications.
