Reducing Isolation of Mentally Ill Inmates

Following our discussion on the ethics in dealing with mental illnesses, this article proved interesting. New laws in Massachusetts are dealing with problems with keeping mentally ill inmates isolated for up to 23 hours a day in small rooms. A lawsuit brought against the state alleged that this isolation violated constitutional rights and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The lawsuit called for more ethical treatment and alternative programs to deal with the behavioral problems and to curb the suicides.
