The Problem with Serving Sizes

Following our debate on eating disorders, an article on the unrealistic serving sizes appeared in the New York Times. Recent pressure on the FDA is pushing for changes in the typical serving sized found on foods. The serving sizes in place today are based on portions from the 1970s and many see these to be outdated especially with ever increasing portion sizes increasing and supersize meals.  Foods such canned soups, ice cream, coffee creamers and nonstick cooking sprays have been identified as some of the most mislabeled. These products understate the calories, sodium and saturated fat the average person typically consumes when eating these foods.
