Engineered Stem Cells Kill HIV

A new  study demonstrates that engineering stem cells to form immune cells that target HIV is effective in suppressing the virus in living tissues in animal subjects. In other studies, T cells have been shown to suppress HIV. In this study, they used human blood stem cells and found that they can form mature T cells that can attack HIV in tissues where the virus is. Mice were the animal subject used as the HIV infected. This did mean though that human immune cells reconstituted at a lower level in the humanized mice than they would in humans. This led to the mice's immune systems being reconstructed, while that isn't as practical for humans.
