Ammonia Used in Many Foods-Not just "Pink Slime"

Cleared 40 years ago, ammonia is used in many foods. Filler for ground beef made of fat trimmings (media dubbed "pink slime") is susceptible to contamination and so issprayed with ammonia mixed with water. Many restuarants and schools are calling for a discontinuation of this pink slime, while some maintain it is safe to eat. The meat industry has pointed out that many companies, such as Kraft Foods, uses ammonia in many products. In the long run, it is the unsavoriness of pink slime that is setting off consumers, as the use of ammonia is far and widespread throughout the food industry.
